Jovian Wars Kickstarter Update: Final Remastered Spaceship Parts Preview Photos

We received the first batch of some of the resin spaceship parts this week. This update has parts photos for a few of the remastered spaceships resin and pewter parts with acrylic pates and posts. The photo includes the remastered Jovian Valiant, Javelin, and Thunderbolt and the CEGA Bricriu, Tengu, and Uller.

The Balancing Act

today's post is going to be partly a discussion about how rules changes in one part of a miniature game rule set can have effects on other parts, and I want to look at how game balance is affected by rules changes. Specifically the different  levels of rules changes there can be. Since there will be another Heavy Gear kickstarter in the Third quarter of 2017 we'll be issuing a rules update for the living rule book so this becomes very relevant right now.

The items that will be updated are being compiled as a list now. What the update amounts to is some points changes, a couple of stat changes, and some of the additional rules (Transport) being clarified and some new model rules being added for models that will be revealed for the kickstarter.

Heavy Gear Blitz 2017 Kickstarter Preview: Warrior IV Model

The Heavy Gear Blitz 2017 Kickstarter to make plastic miniatures for the Peace River, NuCoal, and Utopia faction core models is now set for a mid-September launch. We had hoped to be ready for a July launch, but our 3d modelers are still working on the models for the NuCoal and Utopia. Plus with Gen Con in August and all the work that entails, we think its best to wait until after its out of the way.

Jovian Wars Update: Spaceship Small Pewter Parts Photos

This week we finished making the vulcanized rubber production molds, needed for casting all the small pewter weapons and spaceship parts. Check out the photos below taken in casting area at Dream Pod 9's office, with our 2 spin casting machines and trays full of pewter parts. The parts all turned out very good, you can see a closeup of the Triple Kinetic Cannons (bottom left) and the Engine Fins for the Jovian Engine (bottom right). Larger spaceship parts (main hull, habitat section, engine section, etc.) will be cast in resin.

Jovian Wars Update: CEGA Wraith & Jovian Lancer Squads!

This week we made the vulcanized rubber production molds to run the small pewter miniatures for the new CEGA Wraith and Jovian Lancer Fighter, Recon, and Bomber Squads. We took photos of the pewter parts and then gave the minis a quick coating of light grey primer and mounted them on the 3 post (painted black) squad base and took a photo of them altogether. Checkout the image below to see how the details turned out on the small pewter parts, the Wraith is just 14 mm long by 13 mm wide and the Lancer is 21 mm long by 11 mm wide.

Wargaming 2.0

I've been a war gamer since it was synonymous with role playing games and there almost no division between game types as there is now. Then there was a great revolution where plastic models became available that were designed as playing pieces and not just for modeling. There were companies who had been casting figures in metal for years, mostly historical figures. Almost within a decade the landscape had changed and suddenly dozens of companies were publishing games of all types.

The table top gaming industry is going through a number of revolutions right now that are a natural extension of those early days. The first is price point. The days of mass battle games being the standard are largely gone, replaced with skirmish games. Portability and price point are large selling features, almost as important as a compelling backstory. More than ever today collaboration is the key. Collaboration in the gaming industry used to mean one or two game designers working together with a particular sculptor. Now with the internet the meaning and scope of collaboration has changed and it changes everything.
