Heavy Gear Year! It is 2013 and with the New Year brings the excitement of a new Field Guide. I, like most of you judging by the forums, have been neck deep in Forged in Fire. Let's take a a quick look at the new book and go over some of my favorite features. What stands out for me most about Forged in Fire is the beautiful artwork that fills the book from cover to cover. When I got my copy of the e book I was simply stunned by the cover art, images, and technical images of the gears. The guys have really put a lot of time an effort into bringing everyone the best product they can. I also love the new way of building an army, I think that the new layout brings a way for new and old players alike to jump straight into playing.

I do have a confession to make, I have never read a Heavy Gear book before Locked and Loaded was released. I am therefore not as learned as most of you are when it comes to Heavy Gear history and knowledge. I now own quite a few of the old books, most in e book form, and have read a few of them. So,when I read Forged in Fire it was quite refreshing to be able to read the fluff and history of the South in a compact and encompassing form. I like, some of the new players that got into Heavy Gear in the past few years have been a bit overwhelmed by the massive amount of books that appear when you search for Heavy Gear. I'm sure some of you veteran’s could also agree that finding which book is necessary to play can be daunting for someone trying to get into Heavy Gear. So, let's cover which book you need and why in order to play your chosen faction in Heavy Gear Blitz!

So you have picked the North, the hard lines of their gears have intrigued you and you have chosen to take the fight to your enemy with iconic gears like the Hunter, Grizzly, and Mammoth. Here is what you need:

  1. Locked and Loaded: This book contains the fluff and the army list for your faction.
  2. Field Manual: This book contains all the rules to play Heavy Gear Blitz in its current form.
  3. Gear Up 5: The Gear Up e magazines are free to download and contain fluff, rules, and beta tests for certain things. While this is not required to play I included this in the list because the Gear Up 5 TV adjustments make a world of difference when playing against factions that already have their Field Guides out.
